The recent national debate about old age dependence has highlighted that the elderly often need several types of help. Thus, this is important to consider the capacity to do everyday life tasks to evaluate the loss of autonomy. But it’s also important to take into account the environment of the elderly. To make the notion of dependence more accurate the concept of “weakness” has emerged from the debate.
Since 2007, the surveys made by the CREDOC, at the request of the CNAV (the national pension entity) have shown in practical terms the daily difficulties of the poorest pensioners. Although these persons are not really concerned by dependence, they need a financial or a material help to stay at home : home help, home based care, home adaptation work…
Without help, these difficulties would lead them to reduce spending on food and health, to have mobility difficulties and to experiment a feeling of loneliness.
